Abandon the shocking luxury of temples

On 12 November, another ex-JOC chaplain, Cardinal Feltin called for Easter to be fixed on the same date each year to facilitate the participation of the faithful, particularly those on a schedule such as students.

According to the journalist Henri Fesquet, “the interventions that produced the greatest impression on the Fathers were those which sought the simplification of liturgical vestments.”

Chilean Bishop Manuel Larrain, who called for the Church to take into account “the poverty of the under-developed countries, as well as the social concerns expressed by the encyclicals” and abandon the “shocking luxury of its temples and its liturgical vestments.”

He was backed up by yet another Jocist bishop, Paul Gouyon, who appealed for “greater simplicity,” including the abandonment of the ostentatious cappa magna.

Will we reach people speaking Latin?

During the debate on liturgy, French Bishop Alfred Ancel spoke in favour of the use of the vernacular.

May the Council Fathers who are not involved in ministry remember that a great number of Christians only rarely over the course of their lives enter a church. Is it by speaking Latin that we will be able to reach them?

Liturgy the first topic of discussion

On 15 October 1962, the Council of Presidents decided that the first topic of discussion at the Council would be the schema on the liturgy, De sacra liturgia.

This was thought likely to be among the least controversial subjects as well as being the best schema of the seven that were distributed prior to the Council.

Cardinals Liénart and Frings along with Tisserant, Ruffini and Alfrink voted in favour of this.
